Kitty — did you post this just for me, for my upcoming birthday? Regardless, an important message that I need(ed) to be reminded of.

Chicago friends —

I can’t even begin to tell you what a HUGE win this is for your (already awesome) city.

Peace, love & salty carmel,

I’m a huge believer in the idea that good people surround themselves with good people. Said differently, I believe that my friends have good friends - good people to know, have on your side and add to your list of friends.

Two of my best friends, VAF and Kitty are friends that I met through other friends. There’s always a weird moment when people ask how we know one another and I say “I met VAF through some of my friends from college who worked with her, and then she brought her college friend Kitty to a party and we all met” — it makes it all sound very distant, like passing acquaintances.

This group  of girls is no exception to my theory on good people surrounding themselves with other good people. During the wedding celebrations for Kitty a few years back she brought together a dream team of bridesmaids. People from all walks of her life (high school, college, post-college). Zero drama, tons of laughter, minimal regrets.

And this weekend we’re off to celebrate our VAF (on the right - silver and gold dress) and her 30th birthday in NYC. A weekend with little plans (except for food, natch) and a huge expectation for off-the-charts level of wit.

We’re thinking about a trip to Costa Rica this summer. Sometime in late July, perhaps to celebrate our anniversary — the third one seems as good of a time as any.

In the very early stages of planning now, and have heard a few highlights from friends that we’re trying plan for - namely the Saint Teresa area and staying at the Florblanca.

So now, I turn to you Tumblr friends. Have you been? What / where would you recommend? Any ‘can’t-miss’ spots? Or places that we’re worth it (do those even exist there?) Any and all suggestions, advice or dreams are more than welcome

With much heavier things going on in the US right now, I figured a bit more light-hearted post was in order

On running, on Boston, on prayers

I’m not sure what I can offer in words about the tragedy in Boston that hasn’t already been said. Senseless. Horrifying. Irrational. All seem to barely scratch the surface of emotions around this event.

Being a fellow runner and marathoner, there’s something about this attack that feels so personal. The Boston Marathon is the penultimate running event. You would be hard pressed to find an aspiring marathon runner who can’t rattle off what time they’d need to run to “BQ” (Boston Qualify). People train their entire lives to qualify for Boston and take on this event with gusto.

The spectators, the City of Boston, the race planning and re-planning all go into making this event a legend. And I hate that it’s legendary status is now going to be covered with a black cloud of fear.

I ran this morning thinking about the attack the whole time.About the running community and how welcoming it is, and how polar opposite this attack was to the spirit of running. Whether you run for exercise and feel like you have to, or if you run marathons every year, you’re a part of this family. The early morning runs when you pass someone on the path and give a slight nod and ‘hello’ as if to say, I’m in this with you. The spirit of the race when you see someone who is struggling and you stop to walk with them for a moment and help them along. The moments when you feel like you can’t take another step and you hear someone cheer for you on the sidelines and it reminds you to keep going, it’s not that bad.

There is strength in the running family, and certainly in city of Boston. These qualities that make us a community will draw us even closer and make us stronger for it - I just wish we didn’t have to be shocked into feeling this way. Like the rest of the world, my prayers are with the families and victims of those hurt in the attack in Boston.

If Taylor Swift sang about being 32.

Feels like this hits a little too close to home. Enjoy!

5 things making me happy on a Monday

1. Our good friends, J&K (pictured here in the plaid vest & red sparkly top) welcomed their baby boy Jack into the world last night! It’s fun to see this munchkin come into a world where you know he will be so loved.

2. This post from my girl, D. She really has a way with words and an even keener ability to say exactly what you need, right when you need it most.

3. The 10-day forecast. 52 and sunny on Saturday? Yes, please.

4. Forgotten bath products. The ever-thoughtful Kitty got me this Laura Mercier Almond Coconut Scrub  after the Chicago Marathon 2 seasons ago. I used half, and then in a hoarder moment attempt to save it for later, I put it away in my under-the-sink cabinet. I found it this weekend and it’s made my morning for the past 2 showers.

5. Book Club TONIGHT. Resurfaced after 2 months off, it’s nice to look forward to something on a Monday night now that the Bachelor is over (we’re reviewing The Language of Flowers)

What about you guys? What things made you happy today?

I’ve had the good fortune of going spending a number of trips in San Francisco. It’s easily one of my favorite cities - and not just for the obvious reasons …restaurants, proximity to wine county, ferry building, walkable neighborhoods, mystique of the fog rolling in to the city in the morning… But because of the serendipitous transportation events I’ve experienced there:

1. First girls trip to SF to visit Liz (2008): After a day of wine tasting in napa, we came back into the city to celebrate St. Patrick’s day with the best of them. A night at a bar that we took a slide to get into and we left around 2am. As you might imagine, getting a cab seemed next to impossible. Abbey walked around the corner and returned saying “Hey guys - I found us a ride!” This ride? A casual stretch limo for 5 of us girls. The driver took us around the city, we picked up some street pizza and called it a night.

2. Second girls trip to SF (2009): Same story, out in the city, leave the bar with no cabs in sight. Emily walks across the street and locates a PARTY BUS. We jump in, the driver turns up his CD of NOW 27 and drives us up to Twin Peaks. Singing Rihanna at the top of our lungs, we launched into an impromptu dance party with the lights of SF twinkling down below. Unreal.

3. Trip to SF for Liz’s wedding (2013): Meet the Coe’s for dinner, grab a drink at the bar next door. 100% jet-lagged and delirious, we call it an early night. Walk outside and Danielle says “do you want me to call you an Uber car?”. At the same moment, Vanessa & Matt walk into the storefront next door which happens to be a cupcake shop, walk back out and announce “Hey guys - they’re giving away free cupcakes!” We pick up free cupcakes, walk out to our SUV waiting on the corner, ride back to the hotel and never open our wallets (thanks, D!). Instantaneously I downloaded the uber app and volunteered to call a car for the remainder of the weekend. My mind was officially blown.
